Week 2

Today we read a special Valentine's Day edition of Scholastic News on red and pink colored animals. The article listed several of these animals and why they are red and pink. The vocabulary words for this article included "camouflage", "warning', and "predator". Like the last time I we did Scholastic News, Mrs. Carlson called on different students to read each section of the article. On the back of the issue, there was a math activity including a bar chart and how many of each red and pink animal a group of students saw at the zoo. The students were asked questions that involved them analyzing the graph, such as which animal did the students see the most of and which animals did the students see an odd number of. The article was followed by 3 online components: a video version of the article, a dance activity, and a Valentine's game. Again, I was highly impressed by how many skills and activities Scholastic News manages to pack into one. After that, I worked one-on-one with a student on reading a passage on woodland animals.

For the first half of my time at Hubbell today, the students were at an assembly, so I was sad to not spend as much time working with them. However, it was the 100th day of school today, and on the 100th day of school the second grade dresses like 100 year olds! This was a tradition I participated in when I was in second grade so I was excited to see the class participate in it as well. For the rest of the time I was there, a student and I worked on a 100th day of school math coloring sheet.

Friday morning means library! I met up with the class in the library and helped them find books on the shelves alphabetically using the author's last name. After library, we went back to the classroom to do "Arthub", something I had heard about last week but was not there to see since it had been pushed back due to an assembly. The students and I each grabbed a clipboard and a piece of paper and sat on the carpet. Mrs. Carlson put a drawing tutorial on the board for us to follow along with. Today's drawing tutorial was of a mom and baby fox. After the students finished their drawings, they returned to their tables to color them in. The students all thought their drawings looked bad, which I tried to convince them wasn't true. I told them that I would put their drawings on my blog so everyone could see how great they looked! After Arthub, we moved into a grammar lesson where we learned about base words, prefixes, suffixes, and how they worked together. I also got my first portrait from a student today, which was a great end to my second week.

A drawing of me! :)

  1. Excellent documentation. How does 2nd grade at Hubbell now compare to your time there?
