Week 3
This week we focused on prefixes and suffixes! The students learned about the meanings of different prefixes and suffixes such as re-, un-, -able, and -ful. After learning the meanings, the students were given words with these prefixes and suffixes and had to figure out the meaning. On Tuesday in Guidance, the students learned about what it means to have a "growth mindset", or as the book we read put it, a "Bubblegum Brain". Having a Bubblegum Brain means that your brain can grow and stretch as you learn and practice doing different things. I think this is very important for students to learn. I find that many students become discouraged as soon as they make a mistake. It is good for them to know that they are not going to be the best at everything they do the first time, and that mistakes help us learn. The class also learned about several different topics from Scholastic News this week, including Abraham Lincoln for Presidents' Day and an 11-year-old BMX biker and how she stays focused. We also played games throughout the week, including Pokeno, Dynamite Boom Boom, and a practice game about the "-dge" sound.
