Week 5

On Monday, we did one of my favorite Hubbell Second Grade traditions! Each student is given an egg in a Ziploc bag and must keep it whole and unbroken for the entire day. The egg is representative of the Earth, and the students learn that the Earth is fragile and must be protected. This is part of a unit on nature and conservation. The students came up with many creative ways to protect their egg and were determined to keep them safe. On Tuesday, we started learning about the "oi" and "oy" sounds and the words they are used in. This continued on to Wednesday, where the letters "oi" and "oy" were written on the board and students would come up and add letters to make a whole word with the sound. On Thursday, we learned about the "Biblioburro" in Scholastic News. The Biblioburro, named Beto, is a donkey in Colombia owned by a man named Luis Soriano. Every day, Luis and Beto, carrying hundreds of books, ride to their nearby school from the countryside to read to the students there. "Biblioburro" roughly translates to "Donkey Library". Luis has a second Biblioburro named Alfa, whose name combined with Beto's makes "alfabeto", the Spanish word for alphabet.

  1. How did the kids do with the eggs? How many survived the day?
