Week 7

Monday through Thursday this week I spent most of my time at Hubbell working with students individually on math and reading. I enjoy this time because it allows me to learn more about the students and their strengths and weaknesses given the one-on-one setting. Working with the students one-on-one also helps me develop strategies for different struggles I observe in students. For example, I worked with a student who used counters to help her with addition and subtraction. She was not very interested in math and instead opted to make flower designs out of the counters. I suggested that she could use the designs to solve the math problems. The counters are double sided, one yellow and one red. So, for an addition problem like 5+4, I would tell her to make a design out of 4 red counters and 5 counters, and then count all of the counters she had total. Eager to make a design, she was able to finish the problem and the rest of her worksheet quickly. I think that these strategies and learning how to make them are some of the most important things I am taking away from this experience. On Friday, we did Arthub and went to the library, which I always find is a nice way to end the week.

  1. What sort of academic growth have you see this semester so far? What do you think contributed to the observed growth?
